Discover the Ubol Ratana reservoir: scenery, water and relaxation in Khon Kaen
The Ubol Ratana Reservoir is an impressive body of water in Khon Kaen province, in northeastern Thailand, that combines hydraulic function, natural scenery, and recreational opportunities. Built for irrigation, power generation, and flood control, this place has also become a tranquil destination to enjoy the water, the sunset, and local life.
The reservoir is located in the Ubol Ratana district, Khon Kaen province.
From the town of Khon Kaen, take the main road north and then turn off towards the reservoir, with clear signage leading to the visitor area.
The place has parking, viewpoints and areas prepared for walking.
Main activities: lake, walks and aquatic environment
- Stroll along the shore of the reservoir; enjoy the sweeping views of the water, the hills in the background, and the wind blowing across the surface.
- Leisure activities such as picnics, relaxing by the water, watching the sunset, and leisurely walks around the reservoir.
- There are also kite flights, small boats or boats (depending on the season) to see the water from another angle.
- The area offers amenities such as lakeside cafes, viewpoints, and the possibility of combining the visit with other nearby excursions.
Spending a pleasant afternoon in this park in Khon Kaen
We were enjoying some attractions and restaurants in Khon Kaen, and we'd heard about a beautiful place just an hour's walk from there. We wanted some fresh air without going too far.
To my surprise, just an hour away, I had the opportunity to visit this well-kept and beautiful park to spend an afternoon strolling along a river, taking photos, and breathing in the fresh air.
When you arrive, you don't have the feeling of being in the middle of the jungle or in a national park with basic signage and a visitor center.

A park with a dam and a river
You get the feeling of being in a family park. With picnic areas under the trees, stone tables, and trash cans for people to dispose of their leftovers after eating or having a snack.
But you also don't lose your connection with the area's wild tropical nature. Just take a walk along the river, cross the bridge, or wander off the beaten path to disconnect from civilization and breathe fresh air and be alone.

Peace and meditation
The universe of sounds around you is breathtaking. From birds to insects, you'll be amazed. The day we went, the wind had picked up. A storm began with some rain, but it passed afterward.
There was a tree laden with ripe fruit that began to be shaken by the wind, and fell onto the roof of one of the viewing platforms, making a thunderous noise.
The feeling of peace in contact with nature, combined with the security of a controlled environment not far from a busy city, made me understand why so many locals visit the park with their families.
It would be advisable during the hot season to go early in the morning or late in the day, and then go to a nearby restaurant in the village for dinner before returning to Khon Kaen or continuing on your route if you are passing through.
There is a temple on the other side of the dam, inside the jungle, which is worth visiting for its surroundings and views.
The restaurant we found very close to Ubolratana is this, and these are some of the photos.
